Jason Weiser and Carissa Weiser tell stories from myths, legends, and folklore that have shaped cultures throughout history. Some, like the stories of Aladdin, King Arthur, and Hercules are stories you think you know, but with surprising origins. Others are stories you might not have heard, but really should. All the stories are sourced from world folklore, but retold for modern ears. These are stories of wizards, knights, Vikings, dragons, princesses, and kings from the time when the world beyond the map was a dangerous and wonderful place.

The story of Culhwch and Olwen is that of a thousand quests and why it's probably ok to name your baby after the place they were born...but maybe not if they were born in a literal pigsty.

The creature this week is the Hydrus, who is not the Lernian Hydra, of Heracles fame, but it does get a second act as a Biblical metaphor.

The story of Mirza, from Armenian folklore, and why it pays to be a heavy sleeper. Also, if you find your incredibly angry, stinky uncle chained up in a closet...it's probably best to leave him there. If you can.

The creature this week is Big Bird! If Big Bird ate corpses...

A knight learns that generosity for those in need is good. Generosity to the point where you're in a worse spot than those you're helping? Maybe it's time to make a budget. Also, why you should follow that very, very stinky man in the woods.

The creature is the Hobyah! Despite their fun sounding name, they're horrible. Their victims, sadly, are not much better.

Lord Long Legs is a spider daimyo with ruthless mantis samurai. Sazaye has an impenetrable shell that will always keep him safe. An eel grilling couple discovers a secret in their midst. Three stories collide on this week's episode.

The creature is why hydration might actually be hazardous to your health.

What happens when you mix chastity, violence, and absolutely zero private baths? The history of the Olympian Artemis...and a whole lot of problems.

The creature this week is the Heinzelmännchen, the little naked men who live in your walls.

A Halloween story about the specter bridegroom. A bridegroom. Who's also a specter...and the bride who's actually really ok with that.

The creature is a little piggy with soul. Your soul, to be exact.

The story of Frithiof and Ingeborg is rife with evil trolls, good trolls, sea witches, land witches, and how to move on when the tragedy of the past has changed you (into an actual troll).

The creatures this week are Havman and Havfrue, Danish mer-people who might mer-der you or just give you a nice mer-ssage to relax. Mer.

Viking is a Viking. His dad was either not very creative when it came to naming him, or had a very specific plan for his life. In his story we meet evil giants, awesome mythological dwarf dads, and the only Viking ball game that doesn't turn deadly...during the ball game. It kind of does immediately afterward, though.

The creature is Hogboy! It's a barrow-wight, and it's actually way more terrifying than it sounds.

For the god of healing, Apollo sure does a lot of the exact opposite. Born to a mother on the run from a giant snake, Apollo's life only gets more chaotic and destructive from there.

The creature is Half-Chick! He might be only half a chicken, but he's 100% enema. Yes, you just read that correctly.

Xuanzang, the monk leading the Monkey King, Pigsy, and Sandy on their journey to the west doesn't want to get married. The city full of women who want to marry him don't really care.

The creature is the Guyascutus, a deadly alligator. Imagine that. What an oddity.

Two stories from Indian folklore where we learn that you should always know your exact weight in mangos...because it might help you outrun those eight guys trying to murder you. Also, being a parent is difficult, especially when your clever ideas to punish your kids just make them more awesome.

The creature is the Gulon, from Sweden. It'll turn you into farts.

The story of Fatima is a long one with many twists and turns. There are genies, evil wizards, massive battles, and a world-wide trek to make sure evil pays for its crimes, but at the center is Fatima, a woman who won't back down no matter the opposition, and who always stands for what she knows is right.

The creature is a hairy naked man (another one!) but you actually might want to make this one your friend.

The epic story of Fatima, Dhat Al-Himma, the warrior woman, princess, mystic begins with the misadventures of her family line where they learn the perils of bad poetry, why you shouldn't marry genies, and it might be a bad thing to constantly rob your enemies when your bank account gets a little low.

The creature is Grootslang, a snake with diamond eyes that maybe has an elephant best friend.

You've heard of rock, paper, scissors, but have you heard of slug, frog, snake? That old man you're trying to rob who lives in the mountains by himself has. Hope you like everything being covered in slime.

Apparently these characters were reimagined for the manga/anime Naruto, but I haven't seen Naruto, so please don't sue me, people who own Naruto.

The creature is Jasconius. The island that will eat you.

Two stories from English folklore about the secrets we keep. The first is the story of the Monk of Leicester, Dan Hew, a man who has a few verses of poetry he wants to yell at the married women of the village. All the married women.

Humphrey Kynaston likes to party and has made it his life's goal to spend all his dad's money, a goal he'll be able to check off his todo list sooner than he thinks because he's terrible with money.

The creature is the Dobhar-Chu, a vicious otter who might just get his own true crime podcast.

Two stories from Yiddish folklore of taking a chance, making a change, going for a ride on a giant bird's wings, yelling at a classroom full of kids, and marrying a demon. Not necessarily in that order.

The creature is the Piskie, from Cornwall. It's hopefully wearing clothing!

What would you do if you could have anything you could imagine, but it would cost you everything you have?

That's not a choice Hans made, but one he was stuck with when his dad made a terrible deal for a wishing box.

The creature is why you should help out that unfortunate stranger with their laundry (but not really)

We're back in the story of the Monkey King with the Journey to the West, and we'll see Sun Wukong finally meet his match: a buffalo with a headband.

The creature of the week is the yamachichi, a creepy dude who loves morning breath. And also killing you.

The story of Finette Cendron is like a greatest hits of fairy tales. A tale of betrayal, sisters, ogres, bad poetry, and haircuts, we see three sisters brave the wilds and everything the fairy tale world can throw at them, to make things right.

The creature is Cutty Soams! He'll cut your soams...if he's not a secret Scooby-Doo villain.

Three brothers. One cousin...who they want to marry. It starts in a weird place this week. Three brothers are sent on a quest: the brother who brought back the strangest, coolest item would get to marry her.

A story with magic carpets, genies, fairies, and a man who can wrap his mustache around his head, we learn the value of communication, understanding, and not having people murdered.

The creature this week might not be a creature at all, but simply an elderly woman who doesn't want to be attacked with a knife.

Aphrodite is looking for love in all the wrong places. It's the story of where she came from, her side of her doomed marriage with Hephaestus, and how the love of her very, very long life was a tree baby.

The creature is Buffardello, a small, bearded fairy from Italy with many, many weird hobbies.

Two young men: a wildman determined to collect 1000 swords from defeated samurai, and a displaced son of a clan leader, who had spent his childhood on the run. Together, these two would find their place in the world, and change it in the process.

The creatures are the Keltémas and Kazna Peri, and they just might help you get rich...or lead you out into a snowstorm straight from the bath.

The story of Erec and Enide from Arthurian Legend is a good illustration of why you should try to work out your problems as a couple with empathy, understanding, and communication...and not through a deadly quest filled with pointless, brutal combat.

The creatures are the Elephant Men, the strange visitors you get when you're drinking whiskey with friends down by the river.

Just ask dad

Two Norwegian tales of asking dad. All seven of them. Who live in the same house. Or might not have a house to go back to, depending on the story.

The creature is the orc! It is both different from the Lord of the Rings orc and very currently a problem!

This week, it's the Saga of Göngu-Hrolf, from Icelandic folklore. It starts with a king getting one, solitary, five-foot-long, apparently super attractive hair wrapped in a scarf...and only gets better from there. There are evil wizards belching (yes, belching) fire and poison, somber Vikings getting conned, and a deadly honeypot zombie trap for any heroes who might try to be heroes. It's a fun one.

The creature is the Nunui, and you'll see why you want to wear shoes when gardening.

Maybe? But if what you're willing to give up is your child and the thing you desire is fruit from the garden...maybe rethink your priorities. It's the story of "The White Cat" by Madame d'Aulnoy, and in addition to questionable parenting, there are quests, dwarves that are just doing their job, evil fairies, and cat ballet.

***Slight correction***
I mention that it is 9th century Scotland in the first story. It's...probably not? The stories are just kind of vaguely Medieval or Early Modern and it likely takes place in the late Middle Ages since witchcraft wasn't a capital offense in England until the 1500s.

The 9th century bit was part of a throwaway joke about margaritas at girl's night, but I thought it would be better to be more accurate.

A home improvement project 800 years in the making that includes way too many wolves, rat parts, and beards. It's the story of the Tomten of Åbo Castle, from Finnish folklore.

The creatures are women with varying degrees of faces from British folklore. The one thing they have in common? Drunk, possibly concussed guys are the only people that have seen them.

We're back in the story of the Monkey King as he and the crew continues their journey to the west. Xanzang, the monk, of course gets captured again, but this time, it's by the son of an old friend of Monkey's from back in his pillaging days! He figures things should go well. Because, of course, there is nothing children love more than being bossed around.

The creature is the L'esak, and it's why you shouldn't eat that delicious road bread, no matter how good it looks.

Lucius’s lifelong dream, as of ten minutes ago, is learning how to do sorcery. Luckily, he’s not only in a city crawling with witches who are slicing bits off people’s faces to do their magic and bringing wineskins to life, but his hostess is a sorceress herself, and all he has to do is catch her in the act.

The creature is the Lizard Man, lover of sinking his claws into cars…and his teeth into some Filet-o-Fish sandwiches.

The creature is the Sirin, and they’ll only sing for you if you’re super happy and harmonious. So, kind of never.

What happens when a lion and his prey become best friends? Or when a monkey starts messing around on a worksite? Or a weaver pretends to be a god to woo a princess? The Panchatantra happens. This week, Olympus will fall. The reign of the Greek gods will come to an ignoble end to an enemy that has been lurking in the shadows the whole time. Hear how it all goes down in this definitely serious story about how the rule of the Olympians was usurped by something you see every day.

The creature is the Kickle Snifter! The reason why you should wash your beard! Or don't because who doesn't enjoy having a semi-parasitic friend around all the time?

Two stories from Norse myth. The first is about how you should just be you, even if people think you're a fool for doing so...actually, kind of especially if people think you are a fool for doing so.

The second is about why you shouldn't go to the bathroom alone at night: Norse toilet zombies.

The creature is the Mimick Dog, a dog that will mimic you and maybe put on plays.

A story of believing in yourself and finding your own way in the world...by imitating Pokemon and Hodor and wearing flashy suits from your best friend's stone safehouse. From a story from what's now Czech Republic and Slovakia, called "Prince Bayaya."

A story from One Thousand and One Nights of an incompetent dude, a genie that's more than happy to be used for evil, and how the best legal outcome is one that involves free honey cakes. This is also where we wrap up the framing narrative, and we see if Scheherazade's gambit, of keeping herself alive by telling her husband stories every night for the past 989 days, finally pays off.

The creature is Irusan, the Irish king of the cats, and he is tired of listening to your terrible poetry.

Three stories from Japan about love gone wrong. On the first, the fairest youth in all the land is set to marry the daughter of a rich noble. The problem? His father kind of oversold his looks... On the second, we'll see why moths and other nighttime bugs go toward the light, and on the third, a lovelorn samurai meets a woman from his past he thought was long gone.

The creature just wants you to chill out and stop trying to kill its friends...or else it will make you swell up in horrifying and painful places.

Two stories of King David's magic mirror. One actually involves a folklore version of the Biblical king facing off against an enemy from his past...and maybe turning into a balloon? The second involves a rabbi, a murderous sorcerer, and a magic battle dinner party.

The creature is the Kaibaan, and he's that guy hanging out with his guitar on the quad trying to meet girls. You can spot him because he's the size of a human baby.

From Jason and Carissa Weiser, the hosts of Myths and Legends, comes Scoundrel: History's Forgotten Villains. History consists of heroes and villains (and, I suppose everything in between)... but it's usually the villains who are the most interesting: Their flaws, their quirks, the voids in their hearts that force them to do the unthinkable. These are the characters that fascinate us, that pull us in, that compel us to watch and don’t let us look away. And these are the characters that Scoundrel: History’s Forgotten Villains is all about. Scoundrel, is a new bi-weekly anthology podcast from Kast Media and the award winning creators of Myths & Legends, that tells the stories of the rapscallions through time who were just a little more adept at hiding their evil from historians than others. By joining them on their treacherous journeys, we not only learn about what makes them tick, but more importantly, the times that created them. Sidney Gottlieb, George Remus, Hetty Green, Thomas Blood, James McClintock. They’ve all done horrible things...on varying scales. If there’s anything we can salvage from their misdeeds and incalculable human suffering, it’s the opportunity to use them to elucidate the times they’ve lived… so that we can better understand ourselves.

NEW SHOW NEW SHOW!

We have a new show out. We've partnered with Kast media to make a history podcast called Scoundrel: History's Forgotten Villains. Carissa and I host it and we really think you'll love it. Please check it out here: https://myths.link/scoundrel

--

This story has a little bit of everything: genies, sorcerers, insecure kings, true love (with two practice marriages beforehand that the king insists do not count don't count those), and, of course, dancing houseplants. All of this set against the backdrop of two young people trying to find their place in the world after being abandoned by their parents.

The creatures this time love humans. Like, a lot. Which would be fine...if they weren't giants. We'll see how that works...spoiler: it doesn't.

Two stories from Iceland.

On the first, Signy has a shot at the good life. Unfortunately, that shot involves camping out in a cave with giants, tone deaf swans, and magic flying beds. Oh, and some light kidnapping.

On the second the pastorage servant just wants to kiss that dead guy and does not care who knows it.

The creature is stuck between two dimensions, and they're going to take out their anger about that on you. With their club.

Fighting your own fate: it's a theme nearly as old as human civilization. We'll hear two stories of people who both lament their fate...and see that they are profoundly bad at doing anything about it. The first has a sack maker with a one-hit wonder...and a friend who wants to help him change...and who's also a super-rich king. The second is about a man who goes to look for Chance to try to change his own lot in life...and discovers that he might just be his own worst enemy.

The creatures are the Namahage, from Japan! New Years monsters who want to help you...by scraping the nasty skin off your feet...

Two stories of absolutely real and definitely not fake doctors! The first is a Grimm tale where a guy goes to medical school and opens a practice! Never mind that his medical school is just a white coat and a bone saw! The second is a bit more legit with one cure-all elixir that really does cure all...and it may or may not be yule ale.

The creatures are the buschfrauen! And they will hunt you to the ends of the earth if you mess with their pets or teach you great knitting techniques if you give them a place to stay.

Three stories from Korean folklore! On the first, a boy loves collecting stories, but no one really taught him proper story care, so they went the way of so many carnival goldfish. On the second, a young man protests his unfair (and kind of murdery) working conditions...by turning his boss's lunchbox into a toilet. We're back in the world of King Arthur! It's been too long, and if you haven't heard our King Arthur stories (or it's been a while) then this is the perfect place to jump in. A beginner-friendly episode that kind of resets our timeline. I'm so excited to be getting back into the stories of Arthur and his knights because there are so many good ones still left to tell.

The creature is the hairy, greasy Yamataro (山童), your eternal reminder that, no matter how tempting it seems, to not sumo wrestle strangers on the road.

I'm not going to put the tooth link here because if you have to put on your website that you're following international law to the letter and on the lookout for human rights abuses you're kind of already in the wrong business.

Robin decides that, you know what he needs? To walk directly into the home of his greatest enemies. Nothing bad can come from this. Nothing bad at all.

The creature is the Wolpertinger, a German chimera who might help you solve some problems...but at the expense of your soul.

Two stories from Ireland. On the first, Finn McCool, a giant Irish here, isn't scared! He totally isn't! He's just speed walking away from that guy he's been threatening for weeks who finally showed up at his shore after leaving an incorrect forwarding address.

The second is the story of a Leprechaun, and why you never want to take your eyes off the little guy.

The creatures are the wish hounds! They're surprisingly dark for creatures called "wish hounds."

Two stories from the Italian writer Giovanni Francesco Straparola, who earns the title of one of the earliest fairy tale writers, putting tales down to paper in the 1500s. On the first, you'll learn that you can't con an honest man...and that you really shouldn't, because the honest man three con men do trick out of a mule comes back for vengeance...and beats the con men at their own game.

On the second story, three men are proudly lazy and make a bet to see who can be the laziest scoundrel. They all try to win...by failing.

Three connected stories of samurai from medieval Japan. On the first, Kintaro, a buff eight-year-old, discovers his destiny. On the second, Watanabe no Tsuna, a samurai warrior in his prime fights a demon that's been terrorizing a gate in Kyoto, and on the third he's recruited by Minamoto no Raiko to follow a magical floating skull to a dilapidated haunted house. All these lead into next week, when the heroes will come together to fight the greatest demon in Japan's history: Shuten-dōji.

A packed episode with Thor, Odin, mythological dwarves, sword arms, and Valhalla, all ending up with a beautiful double wedding...which ends somehow worse than the last time we visited a giant wedding on this podcast. We're finishing up the saga of Egil and Asmund.

The creature this time is little mucus boy, and if you're a villain, you don't want to get caught monologuing around this sticky, moist little hero.

An awesome story about a young king who wants to do the impossible! And the ill-advised! And, frankly, makes a kind of stupid choice to go into the murder forest that took the lives of his father and six consecutive brothers.

Inside, a deeper, darker secret lurks, one that brings fairies, witches, sorcery, and...love?

The creature is a tall hairy man who takes issue with your dating choices...all while visiting half the town every night.

The Aeneid, by Virgil, is one of the great world epics. Inspired by, and modeled after, the Odyssey, it's the story of Aeneas's journey from burning Troy to found the Roman empire, and all bleeding ground, sad Cyclopes, and bellybutton-wolves he encounters along the way.

The creature is the Camazotz, from Mayan mythology, and it's like Batman, only if a Batman was an actual bat and not only didn't have an aversion to killing, but was like super into decapitation all day every day.

Our winter Norse saga continues, with our protagonists celebrating Christmas in Norway...and also learning what Christmas is when the king basically puts a sword to their necks and tells them to convert or die.

We’ll also follow Gudrun on marriages 1 and 2, the first ending with a problematic wardrobe malfunction and the second with a meddling of (possible) sorcerers.

The creature is the Tomten, a forlorn little goblin who will either make sure you’re safe in bed...or bite you.

What do you do after you hook the sun, dredge up islands for humanity, and bring fire to the world? How about settle down with a nice goddess, have some kids, and enjoy the simple life. Nevermind that your new spouse's evil ex is on the way...and he's a vicious, monstrous eel. You have nothing to worry about! You're Maui! You have a...fishhook? Ok maybe you do have something to worry about.

The creature is the family tension that leads to you turning someone into a vicious, blood-thirsty firefly.

We're back in the tale of the Journey to the West, where we'll catch up with the pious monk, Xangzang, the Monkey King, Sun Wukong, and the incognito dragon horse, Yulong as they continue their trek to India. This week, they stop off on what they think is a side-quest - helping an old man whose daughter was kidnapped by a pig monster - but they might get more than they bargained for...and make a new friend.

The creature this week is the Milk Bird, your new source of milk that doesn't care about trivial details like birds not being mammals.

The creature this week is the Afanc, which is also from Wales, with a great reason why you don't want that angry lizard beaver monster to fall asleep in your lap.

A reboot, of sorts, of Reynard the Fox, everyone's favorite brutal, amoral trickster. I found a much older, much more nuanced version of the fox's stories. Today, we meet his father, get an origin story, and see him trying to make things right in a society run by predators...or is he working a long con to eat all the animals in his charge? With Reynard, we never really know.

A darkly funny take on the Ättestupa from the show "Norsemen" on Netflix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwD7f5ZWhAk

In one story, a dragon is rampaging around the countryside unless he gets his favorite meal: teenage girls. In the other, a young woman trapped in an impossible situation meets a new friend who might just be able to save her: a parrot with a secret. Two stories with two very different heroines who share one defining characteristic: their unbreakable will to survive.

On the creature of the week, when it comes to making a deal with the devil, you could choose infinite wealth, power, or epic guitar skills...or you could do what the strix did and become a stinky owl monster.

In the third and final part of our series on the Nibelungenlied, the hero of the story, Siegfried, is dead and his wife, the princess, has a score to settle.

The creature this week is the strong toad, a super cool toad who can read your mind, but he's so nice and definitely not making me write this right now.

We pick up right where we left off last week: Gunther has tricked his way into marrying Brunhild, and Brunhild decided to give him a minor test of strength on their wedding night. He failed, and ended up naked and hog-tied, yelling out for help while dangling upside down from the rafters.

The creature is the Tsurube-otoshi (釣瓶落とし), from Japan, who will go head-to-head with you in the forest. Because its a giant head.

The story starts out with one prince slaying a dragon and getting rich. It starts there. The wild ride of the Nibelungenlied has echoes of one of our most beloved stories, the Saga of the Volsungs, with it's over-the-top characters, the ridiculous situations, the betrayals, and, yes, dragon fights.

The creature is a dragon cat with poison breath.

Two stories from the bawdy, funny, and oftentimes deeply unsettling 17th century fairytale author Giambattista Basile, both of which have to do with pets. The first pet is a rooster, whose owner just can't bring himself to kill it. No judgement there. The second pet is a flea...the size of a lamb.

The creature this week is a cat that's either evil and smells like a skunk dog, a hero who defeated a demon, or a hunter who needs a toothbrush.

King Pwyell just wants to go hunting in the dark forest alone. What's the worst that can happen? Huh? Forced to live for a year away from his people at the demand of an otherworldly king? Yeah, ok, that's kind of bad.

It's the first branch of the Mabinogion, the original source for a few of the stories we've told on this podcast, like the very first story from this podcast, that of Yvain and the lady of the fountain. We're finally diving into this amazing work of Welsh folklore and over the next two weeks we'll be covering the first two branches.

“Sing, O muse, of the rage of Achilles, son of Peleus, that brought countless ills upon the Achaeans.”
We're here.
The culmination of a dozen episodes and twice as many stories has led to this. Achilles. Helen. Agamemnon. Menelaus. Hector. Odysseus. There's a reason these names are still with us after thousands of years. This is the story of the Trojan War.

The creature is pretty much the opposite of an epic, brutal war. It's the not-epic, not-intimidating little Tofu boy!

Three stories this week from the Danish fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen about people that are matchless. The first is the tale of the emperor and his new clothes, where an emperor who needs a new coat every hour gets an offer he can't refuse.

The second is about a boy who wants to marry the daughter of a monarch and all the cool gadgets and racially insensitive cosplaying he'll do to win her hand, and the third is the story of the little match girl. That one literally has matches in it. I still do puns.

The creature is the scariest couch potato in the world. If the seas have couches. I mean, they probably have lots of couches with how much trash we throw into them. Ok, I'm sad now.

Fortune favors the bold. Or people willing to put up with a decade of junk. Or the best liars. On this episode, there are two stories: one from Tunisia, and the other from Italy, about people who take their fate into their own hands to varying, oftentimes disastrous results.

The creature is a sad sea goat who just wants to be with all of his other sad sea goats but, because the Greek gods are the Greek gods, he’s doomed to a life of tragedy. Sorry, sad sea goat.
